August 2020 – Exploring Shetland

Week 1:  August has brought us some lovely weather up here in Shetland, we have basked in the sunshine and we have certainly made the most of it!   On Saturday, we headed out to the westside and parked up at Silwick and hiked around Westerwick.  The coast line is beautiful, so much so that we got carried away and before we knew it we had hiked for 7 miles!

On Sunday, we headed up north again, this time to Uyea.  This is an amazing place to visit, with a beautiful beach & rugged coastline.  We parked up at the school and hiked out to Uyea, had a picnic and a paddle and hiked back to the car.  It was a 9 mile round trip and we met a lot of friends on the road out and back.  It is great to see so many Shetlanders making the most of what we have here during this summer of lockdown.  Both our hikes were fuelled by Outdoor Provisions Cherry Bakewell bars – what a find, they are seriously scrummy!

We are continuing to deliver some outdoor training to our clients and it is great to see everyone making progress again.  We are really looking forward to getting the gym door open again, it has been a long time closed!

Week 2:  Russell finally convinced me that camping is a good idea (it has only taken him 10 years!).  This week, we packed up the car and headed up to Unst for 2 days of camping.  We pitched up the tent at Skaw and enjoyed a few Shetland Reel Gins on a beautiful Friday night listening to our client’s Jane & James presenting Give us a Tune!  We spent the 2 days sightseeing, hiking around Hermaness in the fog and exploring the many beaches they have up north!  It is a great place to explore and plenty of sights to see.  We will definitely go back again before the year is out… maybe he’ll let me stay in an Air B&B next time!

Week 3:  This week we had our final few days of the Fit in Fifty Challenge, and we finished with a HIIT session on Wednesday, which got a serious sweat on!  A great way to sign off the challenge.  The group has done so well over the 50 days, making new and sustainable habits, becoming more active and improving their energy levels.  Quite a few of the group have chosen to stay on and work with us with Online Training to keep working towards their goals.  If anyone would like to get involved with online training contact us for more information.

At last we have got some good news from the Scottish Government, the Gym Gair Gym will aim to open on Monday 31st August, we cannot wait!  We have spent the weekend moving equipment to make a safe, social distant way of exercising, fitting a hand sanitiser station, painting, cleaning and keeping our gym to a high standard.  We will be ready for you!!

Week 4:  We topped off our month of exploring Shetland with a staycation with George & Maree in Da Waddle self catering in Walls.  A beautiful Shetland cottage out on the west side, in the most tranquil of surroundings, what a fantastic find!  We went for a walk to see the Burn of Lunklet & a trip to the famous original cake fridge for some home bakes.  We also hiked out to the bay of Deepdale & up Sandness hill, and finished off our weekend with the Culswick circular.  We are now all refreshed and ready to open the gym on Monday 31st August, it has been a long 24 weeks closed!

Our September circuits are now on sale and we will continue to offer this online service for the foreseeable.  It has been a great way to keep active over lockdown, and many of our sign ups have not missed a week since we started back in March.  Just because lockdown has been slightly lifted doesn’t mean that your fitness should stop!  Join us for a high energy workout, a great way to kickstart the week!  Click HERE to buy your space!
